Langsett Cafe

Just for a change we went over the other side this weekend. Weather was nice, dry and sunny.
Cafe at Langsett is very nice.

Ride back over Strines was steep, deliverence never gets any easier.

We even rode past the Nags without having a pint.!!!!!

Saturday 8th December

A very cold day but very sunny with some top views taken by Marc Etches (who can ride on ice)

We headed towards Yondermans via Longstone Edge (which was covered in ice at the top.
Furthest I've walked on a bike ride!!! Highlight for me was watching Ray Mason walk accross a cttle grid in his cycling shoes carrying his bike, when there was a perfectly good gate to the left of it!!!

All safely bag in the Nags before it went dark.

Alex fell off on the ice but I never saw this as I was miles behind walking like a girl!!!

Fwd: Yesterday's Ride

Not sure how forwarding on an email with the ride info attached will work on this blog. Be interesting to see if I can be used rather than putting it on pedal stop as a downloadable file. if it works its a nice lazy way If sharing the route.

New chairs at Yondermans

Sunny November

Great days riding. Started cold. Ian Hull made one. He stopped at Calver for a cuppa. Rest of the lads continued up Longstone Edge to the Yondermans. Put in a loop over Monsall. Sun came out in the afternoon. Marc Joy had a knee op on Wed and was back riding. looking forward to mentioning that to Eric! Mallorca Mick was out and will be next week. Had the company of Rob Wormald , blind Pete and Jonny P. Alex was out but returned via Padley along with Mr Joy. Ray and Nick both out with Man Flu this week.

Think this may well be the coolest photo i have ever seen.

It also satisfies Alex and my man crushes.

CERO AR30 Superlight Alloy Clincher

Dan Story rides for these. RST do a wheelset they say is 1390g but at

http://www.cycledivision.co.uk/product-info.php?pid133.html

£349.99 they are way cheaper than the Dura Ace ones at 1380g. The two
reviews are ok but appart from those i know nothing about these wheels.
Next time I see Dan I will ask him about them.

They also do a rain jacket which he did rave about the last time I
saw him and at £29.99 that's cheaper then most out there.

Mount Nick Hill Climb

In perfect Sheffrec fashion we arrived late and missed the event. only 44 riders took part which is sad for such a class hill climb.
we took the Mam Tor route as I have a pathological fear of Winnats. didn't hear anyone else wanting to ride up it though! Mam Tor is class. Be better on a MTB or motor cross bike though.

after nearly watching the event we dropped down to the nice 'in a pickle cafe' in Chapel. capital of the Peak District has a golden post box. must find out who that was for.
planned route back was up the steep hill and over to Tideswell. after a ride round a housing estate will did find said steep hill. it's very steep actually. then the hail and rain came down. bad for Mick with no gloves or show covers and riding his Litespeed. he's a hard man though and refused my spare wet gloves. by the time we got to the Nags the sun had come out and the place was full of pretty girls.
Pete Barrett made an appearance but sacked it before the Strines turn off. hopefully we will see more of Pete in the future as he's a great guy.
all in all a great days riding despite the nasty hours heavy rain.

summer in October!

perfect days riding. Weather was excellent. made a welcome return to Yondermans to watch Mr Joy eat. Alex matched him on the daft breakfast. we took the daft right after the Abney turn off which brings you out on sir William hill and is steeper. went down Monsall slower than the guys probably went up it today in the race!
Mr Joy got the emergency call as we were leaving the cafe. son locked in bathroom. we only found this out in the Nags much later. the hero raved home and climbed in through the window. so think on if you ever want to rob his place.
now the question for me is. Marks wife managed to pass a games console under the door so Harrison was not bore during this ordeal. how big is the gap under the bathroom door? was it a DS or a Nintendo Wi? either way Marks had no luck with locks over the last few weeks, having to use the farmers bolt cutters to free his bike two weeks ago.

got a picture of my local cycle lane. which I wi attach.

always lock up you bike!

Brilliant days riding I've to Flag cafe. today even I had a bike lock. not sure who would steal our bikes from that remote place. Mr Joy did know the combination but say the lock didn't open so he had to go to the nearest farm for a set of bolt cutters to free the two bikes.

today also saw the return of the Legend that is Ian Hull. all we need now is Bob back in the fold and the group is complete.
strangely in the cafe upstairs we counted 42 plug sockets!!! some actually in the rafters. we need to find out why the have some many.

Big cake

No rider wants to be the weakest link in a group ride. I remember turning up at the bus in my early years and looking around at the riders hoping somebody slower than me would turn up.
today I was the weakest link.
when all your mates know your struggling they never leave you. they just slow up and ride at your redline pace so they can take the piss. very childish but piss funny. they also ask you questions on the steeper climbs knowing fool well you can't fucking breathe. I do love that if I'm honest. not sure you get that in many other sports.

anyway, I had a cold so that's my excuse for any lack of talent today and I'm sticking to it.
top route today which when blind Pete is back riding we will plot with his shiny new Garmin thingy route GPS planner thing and stick it on Pedal Stop.
top cafe that in a pickle is. I wasn't in a pickle but more a tangle when I got there. foods great, just do t mention feminism, don't think it worked for Al.

biggest chocolate cake I've ever seen. pretty sure Mr Joy could have eaten that all on his own and still ridden back in front of me. but we are athletes so only bothered with every other sticky bin in the shop.

even though I was struggling I still did Winnats Pass after a full breakfast.
even got to rehydrate at the Nags an
d take in some sun. quality day in the sun riding with some great mates. my helmet was that salty after I had to put it in the sink. had to use a chair for that as I'm a short arse.

Goyte Valley

We had been waiting all summer for a decent day to ride the Goyte Valley. It started pretty dark but improved as the day went on.
Climbed out of Bradfield with a great view of Strines and Boots Foley. Down past Ladybower and over Thornhill to miss the road works in the valley. Left into Bradwell and up the main road. We actually missed the turn to Peak Forest and had to pick it up further on the road.
Found a nice descent into Chapel on Le Frith. Used a new cafe called 'In a Pickle' very nice place on the left as you ride up the main street. Great food and Illy coffee which was a first for me. Friendly staff and you can keep an eye in your bike while you eat. We will be using that cafe again.
Over to Whaley Bridge and straight on at the lights. It's a steeper climb but keeps you off the busy road. Then the great ride up the valley to the cat and fiddle. Top descent into Buxton before taking off down the very fast and busy main road leading to our turn off for Tideswell.

From there it was down Millers Dale through Tideswell and drop down to Bradwell. Up back over Thornhill and back for a nice pint in the Nags Head.

Top days riding with great company. Stayed dry too so it doesn't really get any better than that does it.

We did meet a rider from Manchester who was bound for Winnats Pass with a 32 sprocket so I hope he got up ok.

Eric once did that climb on a 21 but we don't need to hear that story again do we.

Saturday 25th

More than halfway through the week now.
Last week we had a great ride over Holme Moss and the Snake.

What do you fancy this week? I've not seen the weather forecast.
If you want a big one the Manifold Valley is an option. You can ride to Monyash cafe and make a decision there.
As I'm not setting off on my hols until 2pm I am allowed out for a bit. So I will ride out and probably return early with Eric who has not been getting out much sue to his poorly knee. Has he mentioned that to everyone!!

Saturday should see the return of Jonny P fresh from riding in the sun for a while.

See you all where the bus stop once stood before some drunken monkey ran it over.

Holme Moss

Great days riding started badly with Mick having two punctures on the way to the bus stop and only one tube. Mark Joy with a puncture on Loxley road.

So Eric mediates from his bed. Not sure he appreciated being called but it was fun.
So we changed the route met Mick and road to Holme Firth. Weather looked bad so I made the decision to go directly to the cafe. Wrong call as it stayed dry and Robs scenic route would have been better.

Penny Lane cafe for some food. Always great there. Then off up the Moss. Great conditions really. It's never not windy up there. It at least it was was and dry.
Brilliant watching Ray in basically winter gear plowing up there breathing from his arse.

Over to Glossop and up to the Snake before re grouping at the Ladybower then a steady ride to drink a few beers and have a laugh at the Nags.

Great day. No idea on the miles and don't really care. Company was excellent.

Mellow Thursday

Had a nice potter round Haychatters and up round Strines tonight. Hardly any cars just the odd pheasant and peacock for company. Pretty mellow just riding nice and steady.

Checked my average speed and it wasn't much slower than when I pulled my bag out Monday on a similar maybe steeper route. Makes me wonder if I'm better just pottering all the time.

Rode past the Nags Head twice without stopping for a beer which always upsets me.

Bradfield

Nice route round Bradfield and Strines.
Head up Loxley road and take a left after the Admiral Rodney. (not a drinking pub that) down the hill towards Rowell wheel. Used to have a double wheel there. Continue straight on. The roads badly broken on the left but usually really quiet. Gets pretty steep for a bit but the bend is in your favour so you can take it wide safely. Follow the road round and take the next left. Carry on past Our Cow Mollies ice cream place. If you have time sack it for a whole and get an icecream , very nice their stuff. They do an amazing Christmas pudding flavour. Continue on through the little village with the nice pub on the right. Can't remember the name but they used to do Original Bud not the American rubbish. If your thirsty at this point sack it and have a beer in there.
Take the next left onto a flat road road that goes up steeply before going down down into a sweeping S bend that climbs very steeply for a way. Once over that continue onto the Strines turn off and go right. Long and very bumpy road down to the Strines pub. I hear it's got great food.
Steep descent from there before going over the river and back up past the the paint ball place. Now that is a lot of fun but you can't just tip up for that like you can a beer at the Strines.

Follow the road. You have a hair pin followed by a steep drop with a , well you'll soo. See. Then its round over the bridge before climbing again for quite a while. Next left. This road is broken. You want the 2nd left not the first. Then it's up onto the highest point of the ride. Top view up there. Past the monastery on the left. They don't say much.

After that's it's all downhill. Long nice down hill. Right at the junction then next left if you live Amy house.

Alternative route from the monastery would be right with a long descent down to the Nags head. I've never do e this as Eric normally makes me ride up that stupid climb.

Get yourself a beer in the Nags.

Haxey

The day started over cast as we set off towards Don Valley and the lovely smooth roads there! The plan was to have lunch at the tea pot cafe which we later found out was not in Haxey. Lost but with a couple of iPhones and a Garmin we reverted to a trusty paper map to find the stables cafe which is excellent. By this time the sun had come out and we could eat outside.

The route back took in a nice loop through Climber park before stopping for refreshments at the Kelham Island pub at Shalesmoor. Nice pub that.

As we sat chatting outside the landlord pulled up in his 1960's double decker bus and promptly open the doors to let us have a look around. Amazing last from the past.
All in all a great days riding of around 85 miles.

Top new route

Weather looked pretty grim on the Strines turn down to Ladybower, everyone caped up expecting the to get soaked. All the lads were looking at each other as we had no idea of a route.

Through Bamford and still no real rain so we headed to Grindleford and took the right to Eyam. Over Tideswell where the sun came out so we rode to Peak Forest turning left to Dove Holes.

Bit of aborted off roading and we got to Chapel for lunch at the Stocks cafe before climbing a closed to traffic Rushup. Down Mouy Nick to Edale then over Aston and back up Mosca ending a top ride sat outside enjoying a beer at the Nags.
Top day.

testing

Me and Al went to France and Italy recently. naturally it was bad ass.

Inevitably we broke bikes, bike bits, and bones.

We also saw Sagan in the flesh, following which Alex has discovered he
has broken his elbow.

Coincidence?

Holme Firth

We whimped of the planned route over Holme Moss and Snake as it was cold. I our de fence we did see a bit of snow.
So it was home after the cafe stop via deliverance and safely into the Nags head for a pint of their new kiwi ale. Its not bad but its no Yorkshire Farmers.
If it can hail in Mallorca in April on us it can snow over Holme Firth on a bank holiday weekend!!
What a hobby we have ended up with.

Saturday 31st March

Not the weather we had been treated to during the week. I spent the first few miles with a rain cape on just to keep warm. We had a snapped chain early on but that got sorted.
The run through Chatsworth saw lots of deer.
The main road to Matlock was a tad scary with one old dear hit Marc with her wing mirror without even noticing. Maybe at a certain age they should take the test again or get glasses. It's a good Job his balance is first rate. I would have been on my arse.
Dinner at Cromford is always good.
Headed up Via Gelia but turned off to ride through Bonsall. Very pretty village that is. Then down to Bakewell on on to the Nags Head for beers. They have a rather nice fruit beer called Plum bitter which I recommend.
Great days riding and brilliant company as always.

More next week.

Longnor

Always a favourite this ride. Saturday we had great weather conditions. We even got two of the racing lads along to stretch their legs before Sundays race. Great to see Dan and Ashley out and the sat on the front keeping what wind there was off us.
Don't normally go to Longnor via the gliding club but as the weather was nice it seemed a shame not to.
Dinner at the chip shop in Longnor then home through Monyash and Ashford. Beers at the Nags.
Only one puncture but it was nice to see Jonny P after all those years.

Check your rims

Wet and foggy at the bus stop this Saturday. But not windy or too cold.
Problems started very early. About 10mins into the ride we heard a sound like a single shot from a gun. This turned out to be Mallorca Micks rim exploding! A large section of the breaking surface have come away fro the wheel. Lucky he wasn't going fast. I live the nearest from there so off I went to get him another rear wheel. We set off again but only got as far as the dam wall at Flask before Mick punctured, lucky not my rear wheel! Not Micks lucky day really but it did get better.

Monyash for lunch then all but two of us went up to the Grouse for a lemonade. Alex and myself put a loop in round Eyam then over Strines as the sun had come out making it the best part of the day.

I could kick myself for not getting a picture of Micks rim. But as luck should have it Nick got a pic of Micks bike in its hour of need. Love it.

Pedal stop

Great conditions at the bus stop this morning. Good turn out too. Once you get out of Bradfield and onto Strines its a different world. The wind up there makes you wish you never had Mavic spokes. Brilliant as they are they don't do side wind. Once that was over and we stood at the turn off for Ladybower all the hard work is done. Even on Abney the wind was never as nasty. Rewarded with a really nice ride. Amazing view up there with no cloud cover, just perfect light. Great foos as always in the Yondermans cafe.

Got a picture of Bamford Moor.

Conti feedback

Just had this feedback from a rider.
This might not be a general rule but i bought some of these from James's when Paul Russel told me they were a good cheaper alternative to the Ultra Gator Skin I use on my winter bike, I had 18 punctures in 3 months one time 3 on a 45 mile ride. I threw 'em away after that day and wouldn't go near them again. I switched back to Gator Skins and normal service was resumed.

Mallorca

13th April
I can't wait. Eight of us going this year. Largest group we have had. Special mention to Ian Hull who reads this on his iPad , I hear the Hockney exhibit is worth a look. Ends 9th April in London. I hope they bring it up north. That's where he painted the stuff.

Edale

The weather has been nasty of late. We didn't get out Saturday.
Pete and myself had a late start Sunday and rode out to Ed ale. Roads are better now. Still plenty of snow on the Edale side though. Just there and back. Didn't fancy Mam Nick.

Snow

The best Saturday so far this year. Sunny but cold with I little slush on Strines.
No wind to speak of, which welcome after the dangerous winds of last week.
an amazing view greeted us at the top of Strines. A dusting of snow with the sun coming up over the moors.
There was an abandoned car on the descent to Ladybower and the cold air stung my face. Today's route was straight to Cromford on the main road to avoid any ice on the back roads.
Great cafe at Cromford. After that it was up Via Gellia, another favorite before Bakewell and back along the Hope Valley the way we came. 70 and a beer stop at the Nags.

Freezing

The weather turned very cold over the weekend. Sunny and bright but plenty of ice riding out of Strines.
Blind Petes water bottle froze before we got to Bamford so a cafe stop in Hathersage seemed a good idea. Get a coffee and wait for the world to warm up.
After that we ride to Abney and over the gliding club. On a clear day you can see five counties from the ridge.
Bit of a loop round Strines before heading to the Nags for a beer and a warm by the open fire.

Pete came down on tram lines at Hilsborough on his way home. Only 3rd outing for his new bike too. I don't know of a rider who hasn't fallen foul of those nasty things. Still, nothing broken just a few scratches.
